Development of a Two-Stage Process for Anaerobic Processing of Distillery Vinasse at Existing Treatment Facilities of Alcohol Production
Gladchenko M.A., Kanunnikova M.A., Gaydamaka S.N., Kornilova A.A.

An approach has been formulated and put into practice to ensure that the design engineering solution
is adjusted and the production process for processing waste from alcohol production is brought to the
target values of COD (chemical oxygen demand), treatment effi ciency and low yield of wastewater
volumes. It was possible to achieve the target result by replacing the anaerobic mesophilic (35 °C)
reactor initially proposed in the commercial project with a two-stage process of anaerobic digestion
of distillery vinasse, which included batch bioreactors (SBR), operating on the contact process
principle, before feeding it to the second stage - aerobic conversion, including nitri-denitrifi cation
processes. When developing a two-stage system for anaerobic degradation of vinasse, two SBR
reactors with different temperature conditions were put into operation sequentially (at the 1st stage
- thermophilic 65 °C and at the 2nd stage – mesophilic 35 °C). The proposed engineering solution
made it possible to completely eliminate the consumption of artesian water for diluting the original
distillery vinasse and, at the same time, in just 7 days (residence time at the 1st stage - 2 days, at
the 2nd stage - 5 days) to achieve the effi ciency of reducing the COD of the processed distillery
vinasse at the level of 75–85 %. The proposed two-stage approach at the anaerobic stage of vinasse
degradation can be used if it is necessary to adjust ready-made design commercial engineering
solutions taking into account the needs of a specifi c production cycle of a distillery.
Keywords: distillery vinasse, anaerobic processes, biocatalyst, biogas, two-stage digestion.
