THEORETICAL MODEL OF RESISTANCE DURING ICEBREAKER MOVEMENT IN A CHANNEL OF BROKEN ICE |

Icebreakers and ice navigation vessels are operated in broken ice for a significant part of the time. Broken ice is a serious obstacle to navigation. However, research in the field of creating methods for assessing the seaworthiness of ships in broken ice has not been widely distributed. It is necessary to estimate the amount of resistance of broken ice to predict the seaworthiness in various ice conditions, including when moving by ramming. The physical picture of the interaction of the ship’s hull with broken ice is described in the article. The resistance of broken ice is presented in the form of components of different nature. The principle of constructing a semi-empirical model of the ship’s resistance when moving in broken ice is shown. Calculation formulas can be used to predict the ice propulsion of ships at the design stage. The calculation model of resistance can be refined by recalculating the empirical coeffi cients with the accumulation of experimental data.
