Unmanned Ground Vehicle for Exploring Snow
Cover in Avalanche Areas by GPR |
Sidorenko A.I., Moskvitin A.A., Kondrashova E.S.
The paper presents a concept of a ground-based unmanned automated tracked platform designed for
remote survey of snow cover using ground penetrating radar in hazardous areas such as avalanche
catchment areas.
Traditional observations and studies such as snow surveys and pit work are prohibited in avalanche
catchment areas for safety reasons. Therefore, the use of an alternative method such as ground penetrating
radar in combination with an unmanned carrier, which is an automated platform, will allow conducting
research in avalanche catchment areas safely and covering a large part of the territory in a short time.
The ground-based unmanned automated tracked platform is an autonomous tracked module connected
by a frame of variable width for installing a ground penetrating radar. The use of modular technology
allows the platform to be divided into two autonomous devices to enable movement in hard-to-reach
areas (forest and shrub vegetation, mountain ranges, etc.) during transportation from the foot of the
avalanche basin to the study area.
