This paper explores the impact of electrotelluric fi elds on the operation of grounding systems in
unipolar direct current (DC) transmission systems, with a focus on research conducted at the
Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of
Sciences. The study highlights the potential application of DC transmission in the Sakhalin region,
the only island region in Russia where this technology is not yet utilized, despite its potential to
enhance the reliability of the power system. To assess the infl uence of electrotelluric fi elds, a system
was used to measure potential differences between electrodes. Measurements were conducted using
an electrode system and an analog-to-digital converter capable of registering potentials generated
by electrotelluric fi elds. The study found that horizontal electrotelluric fi elds can induce voltages of
approximately 6 V per kilometer along the line. This discovery opens the possibility of using these
changes as indicators of seismic activity and other geophysical processes. The paper emphasizes the
importance of considering the effects of electrotelluric fi elds in the design and operation of unipolar
cable DC transmission systems, particularly in the context of the Sakhalin region, where adopting
DC transmission could signifi cantly improve the resilience and reliability of the power grid
