Relationship of Fluctuation and Degradation Processes in Solid Materials
Yakubovich B.I.

The relationship between fl uctuation and degradation processes in solid materials has been studied. The main goal
of the work is to determine the possibilities of using fl uctuations to assess degradation changes in solid materials.
Such studies are fundamentally important, because degradation processes lead to changes in the characteristics and
properties of solid materials and cause disruptions in the operation of devices based on them. Degradation processes
leading to changes in the number of point defects in solid materials are considered in a very general form. A strict
quantitative description of such processes is given. Connection has been established between fl uctuations caused by
structural defects in solid materials and degradation processes. Relationships have been obtained, both general and
practically important, linking spectrum of fl uctuations with characteristics of degradation process. It is shown that
intensity of fl uctuations is related to degree of degradation of solid material. It has been established that intensity of
fl uctuations depends on the rate of formation of defects and, thus, on the rate of degradation of the structure of solid
material. It was concluded that fl uctuation spectrum contains information about degree and rate of degradation of the
structure of solid material. It is shown that quality of devices based on solid materials can be assessed from spectrum
of fl uctuations associated with structural defects. Moreover, it is possible to draw conclusions about shortcomings
in quality of devices, both those that arise during manufacturing process and those that manifest themselves during
operation. The results obtained, valid for solid materials of various types, indicate wide possibilities for using
fl uctuations to assess degradation changes in solid materials and, accordingly, to assess quality and reliability of
devices based on them.
Keywords: fl uctuations, noise, solid materials, degradation processes, devices, spectra.
