Tandem System for Destroying Large Asteroids |
Pletnev L.V.
Comets, meteoroids, and small-sized asteroids that enter Earth's atmosphere either burn up or break
apart into pieces without causing signifi cant destruction. The considerable danger lies in space
objects measuring several tens of meters in diameter. The descent of such objects poses a major
threat to the population. Consequently, there arises the issue of detecting such objects, determining
their trajectory, diverting their path, and destruction. Currently, the main unresolved problem is the
destruction of dangerous space objects.
For the destruction of asteroids larger than 10 m in size, a system consisting of a tungsten rod and a
nuclear charge has been proposed. A tungsten rod is needed to create a crater on the surface of the
asteroid into which a nuclear charge falls behind it, since effective destruction of the asteroid is only
possible if the nuclear charge ends up in the asteroid at a depth of several tens of meters.
Two types of real experiments are proposed to determine the degree of destruction of asteroid models
in real and model experiments.
Keywords: asteroid, destruction, tungsten rod, nuclear charge.
