Assessment of the Risk of Forest Fire Impact
on the Population Using a Physical and Mathematical Model
of Soot Formation During Pyrolysis of a Forest Fuel Element |

Forest fi res lead to the release of large amounts of pollutants, including soot particles. The soot
formation process is largely due to the thermal decomposition of dry organic matter when exposed
to elevated temperatures. The purpose of the study is to develop a mathematical model for assessing
harm to public health during thermal decomposition of dry organic matter of forest fuel. A typical
forest fuel (a birch leaf) was considered. Physico-chemical processes are mathematically described
by a system of non-stationary differential equations of thermal conductivity and chemical kinetics
with the corresponding initial and boundary conditions. The assessment of harm to public health
was carried out using a deterministic-probabilistic approach. As a result of the study, typical
dependences of temperature, volume fractions of phases and the probability of harm to health were
obtained for conditions of exposure to a low-intensity surface forest fi re. Recommendations were
proposed for the practical application of software implementation of the considered physical and
mathematical model by software development engineers in the fi eld of predicting the consequences
of forest fi res.
