Experimental Study of the Discharge of Pb-Bi Coolant
Through Cracks of Various Types Into the Atmosphere |

One of the most potentially dangerous emergency situations in nuclear power plants is the
emergency release of the reactor circuit and the leakage of coolant from it. In the circuits
of domestic transport energy research and reactor circuits with lead-bismuth coolant, there
were eutectic leaks from the circuit through cracks in the steam generator housing and in
the leakage drain pipes through the slot seal of the main circulation pump. Also, during the
operation of experimental stands with lead-bismuth coolant, accidents repeatedly occurred
with the leakage of these coolants into the room.
At NSTU named after. R.E. Alekseev at the Department of ATC, an experimental study was
carried out on the characteristics of lead - bismuth coolant fl owing into the atmosphere
through a hole of a circular cross-section and through cracks and comparing them with the
characteristics of water fl owing through the same holes obtained as a result of a previous
study.
The applied task of this research is to search for the operating characteristics of HLMC (leadbismuth) at which the point of equipment depressurization is capable of self-removal. This
information is extremely useful for the operation of equipment with HLMC (lead-bismuth) in
emergency situations associated with depressurization.
