CURRENT STATE AND DIRECTIONS OF DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN OF OPTICAL SYSTEMS

The technical level of the developed optoelectronic devices is primarily determined by the quality of the optical systems used, the optical characteristics of which determine the performance characteristics of the product as a whole. This circumstance determines the most important role of opticians-developers in the process of creating new optical and optoelectronic products. The requirements for designed optical systems often approach the maximum achievable in terms of image quality and weight and size characteristics at high aperture ratios and angular field of view.
At the same time, it should be noted that the design of optical systems is currently more of an “art”, depending on the experience and intuition of the developer, and not an exact engineering discipline that strictly and unambiguously algorithmizes the design process. The software systems do not provide for the stages of synthesis, effective optimization, analysis of the correctional and limiting characteristics of optical systems. Design is impossible without the participation of a highly qualifi ed developer, and the modern scientific basis for computer-aided design (computational optics) in many respects does not solve the tasks assigned to it.
In this regard, at present, the work on the development of new substantive areas of computational optics, which provide a significant increase in efficiency and reduce the design time of optical systems, is of particular relevance. In the series of papers planned for publication, such a direction is presented, which can be defi ned as the theory of orthogonal aberrations. In the first article, an analysis of the current state and directions of development of the design of optical systems is carried out.
