FOUCAULT CURRENTS IN AN UNCLOSED CONDUCTOR AND ABRAHAM’S FORCE |
S.A. GERASIMOV
The weight of an unbalanced conductor located between the poles of an electromagnet is reduced when an alternating electric current is applied to the magnet winding. The change in weight can reach 10–5 N at an amplitude value of the magnetic fi eld induction of 0,025 T and at frequency of 50 Hz. The dependence of the change in weight on the angle of inclination of the conductor satisfies the harmonic law. This is the result of the displacement currents caused by the Foucault
effect on the conductor. The action of displacement currents on a conductor is a radiation reaction identifi ed with Abraham's force. The independence of the change in weight from the position of the conductor in the magnet means that there is no force effect of Foucault currents on the source of
the magnetic field.
