THE LIMITED APPLICABILITY

Frequently used Maxwell equations containing fi elds are justifi ed only within the
framework of linear material equations and only for isotropic media. And even in this
case, as shown in this article, in frequency range of transverse electromagnetic waves the
difference magnetic permeability μ(ω) from 1 is negligible. Transverse electromagnetic
waves exist only in the frequency range where ε(ω)>0 and have a positive group velocity.
The frequency regions, where ε(ω)<0 and μ(ω)<0, exist, but not in frequency range where
transverse electromagnetic waves exist.
