CONCEPT OF COSMIC BEAUTY |

Successful new concepts in any fi eld generally advance best on a solid foundation of philosophical authority that incorporates a coherent history of progress. Particularly potent are relationships to a percept of beauty that resonates with human achievements and aspirations. These considerations engage a higher level of creative effort and apply centrally to science. The concept of paradox, and the related presence of a limit to the ken of man, is a fundamental part of this narrative. It has been stated in many contexts
[1, 2] that the successful grappling of a scientist, author, or artist with a deep problem always seeks an epistemological boundary, ultimately making contact with this utmost impenetrable barrier. Hence, we should interpret the appearance of such a terminus not
as proof of the absurd, but as a profound signal of maximal progress. The research philosophy of Piaget [3], Thomas Mann’s perceptive statement [4], made in his assessment of Sigmund Freud, that «Science never makes an advance until philosophy authorizes and encourages it to do so», and the assertion of Niels Bohr [5] that «A great truth is a truth whose opposite is also a great truth» all give strong affi rmation of this view. Our main objective is the development of an organizing principle of the Universe that represents an object of supreme beauty and likewise stands in full agreement with all observational data; thereby, art and reality are unified, fused, made an identity. Perforce, this involves (1) the identifi cation of a comprehensive organizing principle that is simultaneously (i) an axis of artistic expression and (ii) the architectural basis of a quantitative theoretical system, (2) the classifi cation of the cosmic constituents, and (3) a dynamical representation of their mutual interactions. The main concept of beauty herein developed is the PERFECT UNIVERSE. It is shown that this goal can be reached with an OPTIMIZED ERLANGEN PROGRAM.
