PRESSURE PULSES GENERATED IN METALS UNDER THE ACTION OF NANOSECOND LASER PULSES WITH PERIODICALLY MODULATED INTENSITY |
A.E. ZUBKO, A.A. SAMOKHIN
Pressure pulses induced in metal (liquid Hg) during nanosecond laser ablation are investigated in the framework of continual approach in the case of periodically modulated laser intensity. The main laser pulse duration is 100 ns and its intensity I is modulated with sequence of short (0.1 ns) pulses which have peak intensity I1 = 0.5 I. Considered interval of laser intensity includes the value which gives rise to surface heating up to 1500 K which is lower than critical temperature TC = 1700 K. It is shown that for considered modulation peak duration the main contribution to the pressure during the modulation peak action is due to thermoacoustic effect determined the metal heat expansion without its evaporation. Such situation diminishes «interference» effect between thermoacoustical and surface vaporization mechanisms and is more convenient for acoustic monitoring of irradiated surface displacement with the help of laser and acoustic modulation signals comparison.
Key words: nanosecond laser ablation, absorbing liquids, thermoacoustic signal, surface vaporization.
