A number of works devoted to plasma antennas are considered the conditions under which
the excitation of the plasma column in a dielectric tube by surface wave (SV) takes place.
We analyze a model in which the plasma fi lls the entire space inside the dielectric tube and
on the border with dielectric electron density is suffi cient to spread the surface wave. Really
at this interface electron density drops to near zero. The size of the transition layer is small
compared with a wavelength, but is comparable to the radius of the tube. The results of
measurements of the transition layer by optical method and discuss the excitation conditions
for PV plasma column with a broad transition layer are considered.
