ON THE ROLE OF ELECTRONICALLY EXCITED MOLECULES IN OXIDATION OF NO TO NO2 BY ATMOSPHERIC AIR |

Authors added mixture of nitrogen oxides NxOy (obtained by interaction of nitrogen
acid with copper) to atmospheric air and irradiated this medium with He-Ne laser. The
beam of He-Ne laser produced strong chemical luminescence and stimulated emission of
radiation in directions, different from direction of exciting laser beam. Kinetic analysis
of these phenomena leads to conclusion about chain mechanism of photochemical NO
oxidation reaction in air, including elementary steps:
NO2* + NO3 => 2*NO2 + O
O + NO + M => M + NO2*
